Topic “Sport”

Aims: By the end of the session the Ss will be able tj write a transactional letter asking for information on the topic “Sport”

Task
1 Work in pairs    Read this information and then discuss the questions below it.
What some activities do for you
The Health Education Authority defines fitness as a combination of three elements:
Suppleness - being able to bend, stretch and turn through a full range of movements.
Strength     - being able to exert force for pushing, pulling and lifting.
Stamina      - being able to keep going without getting tired quickly.
All exercise helps improve fitness - but some activities are better for each of the three
elements.

  1. What do you think are the benefits of these activities?
walking racket sports        exercise classes/dance/yoga  cycling
jogging and running     swimming weight-training

team games

2. And what do you think are the disadvantages?

Task 2. suppleness – гибкость
            stamina - выносливость

Here is some more information about four of the activities you discussed Tell your partner any extra information you didn't mention earlier.

Exercise classes/ dance/yoga
Aerobics and dance are a good all-round exercise, even for beginners, yoga is very good for suppleness and can also help you relax.

Racket sports

Badminton, tennis and squash are all good for all-round fitness, especially leg strength and suppleness. The better you get the more stamina is needed

Weight-training

Becoming increasingly popular, especially among women. All weight-training improves strength and suppleness and repeating exercises improves stamina. It is important to have the proper training for more strenuous exercises.

Team games
Very good for stamina and strength anU
depending on the sport, can be good
suppleness too. At a
competitive level there
is some risk of injury,
and training is
important.

Walking
The most natural exercise.
Brisk walking improves
stamina, but for strength and
suppleness it is best to turn
to other activities.
Walking is
excellent for
relieving
tension and
stress.

Swimming
The best all-round activity for fitness. Extremely good for strength and stamina and good for suppleness, especially if you use different strokes.

Cycling

Good for stamina and improving leg strength. It is also good for suppleness in older people. The negative factors are pollution and traffic accidents

Bowling

Good for improving flexibility in arms and shoulders and for building up strength. Not much stamina is needed. Mainly an activity for older people, but many young people are now taking up the game

Jogging and running

Good for stamina, but not for suppleness or upper body strength. There is also risk of damage to feet, knees, ankles and hips. If possible it is best to run on grass

Task 3  #   This is the end of a letter that a friend of yours has written you. What are your friend's   problems? Highlight the main points in the letter.

and I get out of breath when I climb the stairs. I seem to get headaches a lot too,
which makes it hard to study. And when I'm looking forward to a plate of chips,'I
can't even open the top of a new ketchup bottle! So I decided to play a game of
tennis on Saturday, but I felt so stiff the next day that I could hardly move! I don't
really think sport is the answer for me.
Anyway, enough of my problems! Hope you're fit and well!
Write to me soon,
Best wishes, J

Task 6      Free life membership!

There are two important points missing from this letter. What are they?
You   can have   a  healthy  bank  balance,   a fast  car,   the   latest   fashions  etc.   but   if you  don't  have  good  health  you  can't  enjoy any  of   it.   It's   the most   important  thing  in your  life.   So  you  must   look  after  it.
Keeping fit  helps   to  maintain  a  healthy    . lifestyle;   you  can  work  out  your  stress while  working, on  your  heart,   stamina, flexibility  and  strength.   We all   know  that exercise  releases  happy  chemicals  into  our bodies,   keeping  depression  away. Personally,   I really  feel  good  after  some energetic  exercise.   If  you  are  fit  you  can fight  off  infection  much  better  too. Eating  healthily  maintains   fitness, guards  against  disease  and  can  also  help  to keep  you  in  shape.   If   I  were  a  life  member of   Renaissance   I   would   spend  an  hour   a  day working  out   in  the  weights   room  because this   is   the  most   time-efficient  way  of
getting  fit.                        146 words
